Crazy crooked elbow tree
Wacky tree near the San Gabriel “river” and an oil refinery in L.A.
Disclosure: I photoshopped out some greenery near the top left that I didn’t think added aesthetically to the photograph.
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Cruised through the L.A. neighborhood of Brentwood - O.J.’s home - on our way to La Jolla today. Beautiful. Lots of gates.

Leadbetter beach at Santa Barbara …

California dreaming
Ocean Beach just out of San Francisco: glorious in the sun.
OK, so a million people have done this, but I happened to be googling an address lately, and it was close to my parents’ house - where I grew up.
So I decided to virtually fly over and check it out:
There you have it - the house I grew up in. And my Dad’s old white […]
Wisdom versus intelligence
Saw this quote in an ESPN story:
The point is that knowledge and the ability to make a good decision correlate only sporadically, and there are plenty of times when knowledge gets in the way of judgement.
To me, that’s the difference between wisdom and intelligence.
How to get smarter
The Guardian is reporting on a BBC show about how to get smarter.
How do you get smarter?

The American Obsession with Race
Can someone please tell me why Americans are obsessed with race?
I happened to be searching for quite a few schools online today - double-checking a small subset of some contact data that we had received to gain some assurance that all of it was good - and all the school info aggregators had a high […]
I think I read John Gatto’s Teacher of the Year acceptance speech about 3-4 years ago, but somehow I happened across it again today.
This is subversive, dangerous, powder-keg stuff! It’s also great thinking and writing.
I don’t know how true it is, but it feels true, smells true, and seems to answer a lot of questions […]
Yesterday Teresa and I were strolling through Vancouver and happened to see a Roche-Bobois store.
Since we both love furniture and design, we went in (even though we had the kids with us). Fortunately the sales staff were friendly and helpful - not always the case in high-end furniture stores when you come in with kids.
I […]
Vancouver architecture
Something old, something new. Snapped this yesterday while strolling around downtown Vancouver.
Deep Sea 3D - great nature film
Yesterday Teresa and I took the kids into downtown Vancouver to the CN Imax theatre for the Deep Sea 3D Imax film. (See the trailer.)
Here’s the obligatory shot of us all (except for Teresa, taking the picture) with our 3-D glasses. (The kids size was so big we had to hold them onto Aidan’s head!)
We […]
Birthday gift: hockey net
Teresa and the kids gave me a hockey net for my 34th birthday, last week. It took about half an hour to assemble - not bad - and it’s much better than our old one.
Ethan, Aidan, Gabrielle and I have already put it to several hours of good use!
Interview at Van2.0
Gerald at Vancouver Web 2.0 Forum published an interview he did with me today.
Very nice if I do say so myself.
As I mentioned recently, I’ve been looking for ways to simplify this site.
It’s a truism, but more is not always more.
And I was really starting to feel that more was less. So I’ve been getting rid of stuff:

all the “add to Google,” “add to feedburner,” “add to My Yahoo,” etc. […]
